1. Wrathchild America – Desert Grins

These unsung local heroes have been on my mind a lot lately. Considered by many to be the best band of the late 80s-early 90s that never made it big, these guys were ahead of their time, and their sound was unique, impossible to pigeonhole into one metal category. These days, they are all doing their own thing, most notably super drummer Shannon Larkin, playing with Godsmack.

2. Pantera – Strength Beyond Strength

Ok local bands. We have heard you all play Walk at some point. Cover this song and impress me. One of my favorites from Far Beyond Driven. Like drinking a pot of coffee in 3 minutes. BRUTAL.

3. The Damned Things – The Blues Havin’ Blues

From last year’s Iconoclast album (by far one of the best rock albums of last year), I love that it shows a different direction for both Scott Ian and Rob Caggiano of Anthrax (more rock, less metal), and Keith Buckley of Every Time I Die (some serious singing, less screaming).

4. Brant Bjork – Spanish Tiles

Beautiful tune from the Kyuss drummer, a mellower change of pace from the legendary desert rock drummer.

5. Lynyrd Skynyrd – Four Walls of Raiford

Far too many people dismiss Skynyrd as the “redneck Freebird band”. Very unfair generalization – these guys wrote some DAMN good songs over the years. This song is a sorrowful tale of a man on death row. Fans of Cash’s Folsom Prison Blues will love this one.

*Bonus! Check out Jamey Johnson’s cover of Raiford. Jamey is one of the best country singers out today, and definitely does this one justice. Check it out.

6. Santo & Johnny – Sleepwalk

A little off my beaten path, I know (hell, do I even HAVE a beaten path?). But this is one of the most moving songs in the world to me. Always puts a smile on my face, and instantly evokes happiness. So much said without a single word in the song.
