The Quartet of Woah!

I love nothing more than hearing a band for the first time, and thinking, “People NEED to hear these guys!” Such is the case this week when I heard The Quartet of Woah! These four guys from Portugal were brought to my attention by a friend, and I am glad he did. It would be easy to write them off as “stoner rock,” but that doesn’t even begin to cover it. Imagine if Deep Purple, Yes, Fu Manchu and Black Sabbath and the Black Keys all got melted down, swirled around, and poured back out…that might start to cover what you get from The Quartet of Woah!

Take a listen to their single, “U Turn,” from their 2012 debut album Ultrabomb.

The heavy guitar and bass is there, but that organ is what sets them apart. The organ sound is a gut-punch, with a sound like Jon Lord come back from the grave. The guitar and bass tones are thick as syrup, the drums thunderous, and the vocals, performed by all 4 members of the band, are passionate, both wailing and subdued in all the right places.

The songs on Ultrabomb just exude such a groove, if you are not, at a minimum, tapping your foot, you are probably dead. Seek medical attention.

Mixed in with the heavy rock sound is a collage of sounds and styles, blended in perfectly so that you’re never questioning whether you’re hearing a different band, just different aspects of the same band. Songs like the piano-driven “The Ultrabomb,” or just the raw rock heaviness of “Taste of Hate” or “How to Build a Bomb” are great, and when TQOW channels Yes on “Prodigal Son,” it shows yet another side of the band. By the time the album wraps up with the soulful, bluesy jam “The Machine Limps Towards the End,” the listener feels like they have taken an enthralling musical journey through time, space, riffs and notes.

If you are lucky enough to live in Europe and can catch them live, DO IT. Plans are in the works for The Quartet to make it to America, hopefully later in 2013. Keep your eyes peeled, and don’t miss them! Meanwhile, take a listen to Ultrabomb below.

Friday Find – 3/15/2013

Here we are, the end of another week. Springtime is trying to break through the cold, but old man winter is tryin’ to hang on for dear life. Not long til some sunny days spent on two wheels, listening to some righteous tunes.

And what could be more righteous than some heavy stoner rock that has been thoroughly soaked in the blues? Out of Kingston, NY, this trio takes 2 genres, and makes them as right together as peanut butter and jelly. Slide guitar, harmonica, raspy vocals and heavy distortion as the perfect formula for every song on Handmade Heavy Blues. My standouts on this album are the chunky “Do It In the Road”, the slow, syrupy “Eyes Like Laserbeams”, and the funky groove of “I Just Wanna Get High With You.” This album just came out on March 2, and believe me…you will be hearing a lot more from these guys. They will be a part of The Eye of the Stoned Goat 3 in Brooklyn, NY on July 27th, which has a hell of a lineup. Now go grab a cold beer or some whiskey, kick your feet up and give this album a listen.

 

Jimi Hendrix – People, Hell and Angels

40 years after the guitar legend’s death, we see the release of the last lost tracks from Jimi and his Band of Gypsys. Not a lot of groundbreaking material, but it’s the bluesy rock genius that Jimi was known for. Superb drumming by the amazing Buddy Miles on most of the tracks (Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell plays on three songs) and wicked rhythm from bassist Billy Cox, this album is a true gem and gives a clearer picture of where Jimi’s head was at musically just prior to his death as the follow-up album to Electric Ladyland.

 

Rage Against the Machine

I have always loved seeing videos of band before they got huge. It’s always piqued my interest to see where they came from, and what they were like when they were young and hungry, before the big time. This is a video of Rage Against the Machine from March 29th, 1992 at Zed’s Records in Long Beach, CA. They began recording their self-titled hit record in April, and released it in November of that year. This is a performance from when they were on the verge of beginning their rise to fame and it is refreshing to see videos like this sometimes. THIS is why you support the local music scene, wherever you are. cause you never know when that band you saw at a DIY show at a Mexican restaurant is gonna record that legendary album next month.

 

Friday Find – 1/4/13

Welcome to the first of a completely non-committal, semi-regular feature I will have on here called Friday Find. I will feature some cool music that I have found in the previous week and give you something to gnaw on over the weekend. Maybe something you’ve heard, maybe not. This week are a few bands I found while browsing around Bandcamp. Specifically, I found them under the tag “stoner rock”. Bandcamp is a great source of new music – definitely give it a look around.

Royal Thunder

To me, there is no greater feeling than when you first check out a band and for whatever reason, they just completely blow you away. This happened this week the first time I heard Royal Thunder. Their latest album, CVI is a  swooning masterpiece of psychedelic, ’70s tinged bluesy metal. Vocalis/bassist Mlny Parsonz is fantastically perfect, her smoky voice ranging from a seductive croon to a mournful or vindictive howl. The big, full sound of the music is exactly what is needed, working in unison with Parsonz. Drummer Lee Smith beats out a perfect rhythm, slow and doomy at times, other times speeding it up, the heavy double bass bellowing in at just the right moment to add to the chaos and urgency of the song. (I believe Lee Smith has since been replaced by MonstrO drummer Evan Diprima).

On “No Good”, Parsonz wails at the object of her anger, “Smooth talkin’ fiend, your slick, but I don’t don’t, I don’t like you, leave me alone!” Other songs, such as “Drown”, take the listener on a voyage of many auditory moods, from its trippy beginnings, building in a crescendo to an intense climax and back again. Mood swings like this are found throughout the album, but are woven together beautifully, never feeling disjointed or scatterbrained.

There are hints of other bands sounds on here, never enough to sound like a clone or a copy, just that hint of an influence: Janis Joplin, Ann Wilson, Alice in Chains, Led Zeppelin, even enough shades of contemporaries such as Kylesa or Baroness. Yet Royal Thunder sounds like none of the aforementioned artists. They stand completely on their own, in a very unique way. I cannot recommend this band and CVI enough. I am utterly heartbroken that AFTER I heard this album I found out that they headlined at DC9 on 12/17, and I had missed them. Don’t make the same mistake.

The Heavy Eyes

Like a huge glob of resin left over from the ’70s, Memphis, TN’s The Heavy Eyes are keeping the retro-stoner sound alive. With massive, bluesy, fuzzed-out riffs, every song is an over-the top jam of enormous sound. Mixing the best elements of John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, Blue Cheer, and Black Sabbath, these guys are out of sight, and would sound superb crankin’ out of a boogie van with a Frazetta warrior airbrushed on the side. Every song has a delicious groove, with bassist Wally Anderson’s immense bass tone and vocalist/guitarist Tripp Shumake’s combination of chunky riffs and haunting, echoey vocals. Drummer Eric Garcia rounds out the package perfectly, and it all adds up to a groovy sound that is made to be played on vinyl. These guys will definitely be in my rotation regularly, and I really hope they add some live dates soon.
